Shani Amavasya is the Amavasya (dark moon) day that falls on a
Shanivar or Saturday. As Saturn is believed to be the lord of Saturday and
amawasya a dark night which is black in color, the
day is known as Shani Amawasya.

Shani Amavasya puja has been given a special importance. Worshipping Lord
Shani and offering him naivedya on Shani Amawasya can reduce the evil effects of
Saturn on their lives. Shani amawasya is also known as Shani Amavas.
