It is a matter of common sense that no creation is possible without the conjunction of a male and a female. What we observe in our daily life; has been translated in philosophy also. If we consider Samkhya Philosophy, it considers two basic or ultimate primordial components of this universe – Purusha (male principle) and Prakriti (female principle). And it describes the whole evolutionary process as coming out of Prakriti due to its conjunction with Purusha. Adavita Vedantic Philosophy although talks about only one absolute reality, i.e. Brahma; it also discusses in length about the two - Brahma and Maya. The logical superiority of Adavita Vedantic Philosophy over Samkhya Philosophy lies in its proclamation of the unity of Brahma and Maya as fire and its burning capacity. Chinese Philosophy also expresses the same male and female principles as Yin and Yang as the base of the whole evolutionary process.

The idols of Shivlinga and Ardhanareeshwar represent the same concept. And by worshiping them as our divine father and divine mother we acknowledge and thank them for giving us the opportunity for burning our Karmas. In Hinduism, we firmly believe that unless we get rid of the burden of our previous Karmas we cannot get Moksha (salvation). We are blindfolded by the subtle impressions on our subconscious mind by our previous Karmas which lead us in committing the same mistakes again and again.

Mercury is considered to symbolically represent Shiva and silver to Shakti. Parad is believed to be very auspicious substance. It is believed that it washes away our sins and hence purifies us.
